Fire Safety Advisor – Workplace Emergency

As of 1 July 2009 the revised Queensland Building Fire Safety Regulation 2008 requires that ‘high occupancy buildings’ appoint a Fire Safety Advisor. High occupancy buildings are defined as:

  • Workplaces where there are 30 or more employees,
  • Class 2 or 3 building that is more than 25m in height
  • Licensed premises or class 4 that have been identified by the Commissioner

This course is designed to provide participants with the skill, knowledge and experience to perform the duties of a Fire Safety Advisor. It provides knowledge in preparing for emergencies, operation of workplace emergency systems, command and control, liaison with emergency services and communication needs to safely and effectively deal with workplace emergencies.

Prerequisites: 

There are no prerequisite requirements for individual units of competency.

Course Outcomes: 

Understand the role and responsibilities of the Fire Safety Advisor:

  • Develop an understanding of the Legislation that impacts on building fire safety in Queensland
  • Identify fire safety installations/equipment in a building
  • Develop an awareness and understanding of maintenance and records pertaining to fire safety
  • Develop risk management strategies and understand the emergency planning process
  • Understand the role and responsibilities of emergency control organisation members
  • Understand the role and functions of the emergency planning committee
  • Select and operate portable fire fighting equipment
  • Conduct and evaluate evacuation exercises and fire drills

Core units

  • PUAWER001B - Identify, prevent and report potential workplace emergency situations
  • PUAWER002B - Ensure workplace emergency procedures, systems and processes are implemented
  • PUAWER003B - Manage and monitor workplace emergency procedures, equipment and other resources
  • PUAWER004B - Respond to workplace emergencies
  • PUAWER005B - Operate as part of an emergency control organisation
  • PUAWER006B - Lead an emergency control organisation
  • PUAWER007B - Manage an emergency control organisation
  • PUAWER008B - Confine small workplace emergencies
Qualification Rules: 

To be awarded this Statement of Attainment, the student must successfully complete 8 units of competency.

Accreditation and Articulation: 

After achieving this Statement of Attainment students will receive a Statement of Attainment for units from the Public Safety Training package.
This Statement of Attainment is recognised nationally under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF).

Pathways from the Qualification: 

After achieving this Statement of Attainment, students may undertake a range of qualifications from the Public Safety Training Package, Community Safety stream.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL): 

A formal process for recognising skills and knowledge, RPL takes into account previous studies you may have completed as well as life and work experiences. You may be granted credits or exemptions for some units in this course.
